In a country smaller than the state of Maine there is 8,000 (eight thousand!) active paragliding and hang gliding pilots. Can you believe? Do they teach flying in Austrian schools? You could say so. And if one day you wake up in the middle of Austria and look out of the window you will know why. The Alps. High glaciated peaks, beautiful green valleys, and perfect infrastructure with roads everywhere. Austria offers great diversity of flying locations on both sides of the main spine of the European Alps. The spectacular landscape, large meadow takeoffs, and great free flying potential draw pilots in spring and summer to Austrian Alps. Join us on this great paragliding adventure this July. |

The whole eastern arc of the Alps belongs to Austria. Flying sites are scattered on both sides of the main spine which curves from Austrian Tyrol in the west to Carinthia in the South. This abundance of perfect landscape caused great popularity of free flying sports in Austria. Most takeoffs are gently sloped alpine meadows located high above the tree line. It is not uncommon that dozens of pilots can set up and takeoff at the same time. Large takeoffs like that plus plenty of big grass fields in the valleys make launches and landings stress free. You just fly and enjoy the landscape while covering distance. Traditionally the best time to fly in this part of the Alps is the second half of spring until early summer. |

This trip is for pilots who already have some thermaling experience behind their belt. All participants should be comfortable and proficient in launching, thermaling, and landing. |

Paragliding sites | |||||||||||||
Austrian Alps have incredible selection and variety of excellent flying sites and takeoffs. Many of them have convenient cable car access. We will concentrate on sites in Pinzgau's Salzach valley - the famous XC highway of the Alps. Our primary sites will be Wildkogel, Schmittenhohe, and Hollersbah. If weather forecast requires we will choose sites on the other side of the spine of the Alps like Greifenburg or Sillian. To experience different microclimates and surroundings we will make a day trip to neighboring valleys of Zillertal and Gastain. All the mentioned sites are in two hours drive radius. Every day we choose flying sites based on weather, pilots skills, and their wishes. Schmittenhohe 6,360ft (1940m) - No. 1 on the map |
|||||||||||||
Hollersbach 3,750ft (1140m) - No. 3 on the map
This is an afternoon site located on the opposite side of the valley from Wildkogel. Northern winds from German Bavaria get funneled by Thun pass and hit straight on the main range of the High Tauren Alps at Hollersbah takeoff. This allows smooth soaring with setting sun and climbing high above high pastures and rocky spines with great views of the highest snow caped peaks. The takeoff is a huge meadow allowing toplandings with evening winds. |

Alternative sites | |||||||||||||
Fulseck and Stubnerkogel, Gasteiner Valley - No. 4 on the map Those are two major flying sites in Gastainer Valley - a perpendicular valley to Salzach. Stubnerkogel is excellent for long XC while Fulsecks on the opposite side of the valley offers panoramic afternoon flights in front of the hart of the High Tauern Alps. From there the classic XC route of Gastainer Promenade is an excellent tour around the high peaks which surround the valley. Distance hungry pilots can fly from there toward Pinzgau and continue along the XC highway. Both takeoffs have convenient cable car access. Emberger Alm, Greifenburg - No. 5 on the map This site on the Southern side of the Alps has its special microclimate which makes it flyable even when Northern Alps are covered in clouds and rain. It is popular with both paragliders and hangliders due to easy cross country flying along large valley of Drau river. The triangle shaped system of surrounding valleys allows the traditional circular XC route around Kreuzeck mountain of 60 miles (100km) or more. And while waiting at the takeoff for the fist thermals to kick in you can drink coffee and eat apple strudel at the takeoff's coffee shop with a great view. Sillian - No. 6 on the map This is one of the most classic XC flying sites of the Alps. Multitude of cable car accessible takeoffs allows launches in various conditions. From here you can fly west following Pustertal valley toward Italian South Tyrol including northern flanks of Dolomites or you can fly east toward the famous flying area of Greifenburg. Zillertal Zillertal is a steep valley located in Austrian Tyrol. Its popularity between free fliers and wide selection of takeoffs ensure that you always have other paragliders in the air. Getting to the main takeoff is easy and views from the takeoff's cafeteria are excellent. Once airborne you can fly into high alpine environment of Hintertux glacier, soar on smooth late afternoon restitution, or go on a long XC into Pinzgau jumping across Gerlos pass. If the forecast for more than a couple of days is not promising we will consider moving all together farther south closer to Mediterranean sea to sites in Italy or Slovenia like Bassano, Meduno, or Lijak which are often flyable when the rest of the Alps endures stormy weather. |

About Austria | |||||||||||||
Austria is a high mountain country and lays in central Europe north-east of Italy. It has an alpine climate with mild to hot summers in the mountain valleys. Summer temperatures can be relatively high, with average temperatures in the high-70°Fs (mid-20°Cs). It is a prosperous and democratic country, and a member European Union and eurozone (Euro as a currency). Austria is one of the richest countries in the world with a very high standard of living. Austria has excellent infrastructure with transportation, public services, and health care of prime quality. German is Austria's official language. Schnapps of 60% alcohol or fruit brandy is widely drunk and produced in small private distilleries. Did I mention my favorite: Schinkenspeck (juniper-flavored smoked ham)? If you wish to take a day off from flying there are countless activities available: trekking, biking, mountain excursions, Tauern SPA thermal baths, ice caves, or historical city of Salzburg. |
