This trip takes us to two top autumn flying places in the European Alps: Bassano del Grappa and the Dolomites.

Soaring vertical limestone cliffs of the Italian Dolomites offers pilots a truly incredible scenery. The landscape is stunning and the place was chosen by United Nations' UNESCO as a world heritage site. Flying from Col Rodella over Marmolada's glacier should be on every paraglider pilot to do list.

Bassano del Grappa lays at the foothills of the Alps. Just behind the town the very first range of the mountains rises while in front Venetian plains stretch until the Mediterranean sea. The area is well protected from inclement alpine weather and offers one of the most reliable flying during European spring and autumn.

This trip is back-to-back with our Slovenia tour. For pilots participating in the two trips we provide free transportation between the trips' locations.

  Dolomites
Paragliding Dolomites. Catinaccio Massif, Val di Fassa, Italy Paragliding Dolomites. Col Rodella takeoff, Italy

The paragliding season in the Dolomites starts in September and lasts trough October. During that time skies above Dolomite's Fassa Valley are full of paragliders running away from autumn inversion and season's end at the rest of the high Alps. While long XC flights are possible the main attraction is paragliding sightseeing, thermal & technical flying.

Sunset soaring around Sasso Lungo towers is appropriate even for pilots with less experience and it offers mountain panoramas like no other. While seasoned pilots can embark on a Dolomite's XC aerial tour spanning Sella group, Sass Pordori, Rosengarten and the famous Marmolada - 3,500m high queen of the Dolomites.

During our days in the Dolomites we will be based in the town of Campitello at the hart of Fassa valley. This is the starting point of Col Rodella cable car which takes us to the grassy takeoffs at 2,300m. The takeoffs' high elevation ensures that they are above inversion and produces strong thermals even in late autumn. As the mountains are steep it is always easy to reach large, grassy and plentiful landing in the valley. Expect a few hours sightseeing flights and XCs of up to 60km on a good day.

  Bassano del Grappa
Paragliding at Bassano. Bassano main LZ at the Semonzo village flight park during 2017 World Paragliding Championship Paragliding at Bassano. The grassy high plateau of Cima Grappa of the Bassano range.

The Bassano ridge runs East to West for miles. Its slopes are covered with grass and vegetation and the valley is filled with Italian villages and vineyards. Various takeoffs in the area provide great start for XC along the ridge and out into the flats. PG World Cups and World Championship took place here. This and abundant infrastructure for pilots turned the place into a free flying mecca. Plenty of pilots come here not only for flying but for cultural and culinary experience, too. Expect a few hours flights and XCs.

During our Bassano days will be based in Semonzo town. This is where the whole pg infrastructure and official landings are located. A paved road from Semonzo reaches all takeoffs in the area.

  The tour
Paragliding the Dolomites. The iconic Sassolungo massif just north of the Col Rodella takeoff. Paragliding the Dolomites. Sassolungo seen from the Col Rodella take off.

Every day we will choose our flying location based on weather forecast. The Basano area is always the most reliable. Then, if flying weather allows, we will go for a day trip to Val Belluna valley (Feltre or Dolada). Yet, if the weather is even better we will fly the Dolomites in Val di Fassa (Col Rodella).

As on every tour I organize we start a day with a briefing including weather forecast followed by setting the day's flight plan. While we fly together I guide the group in the air helping with transitions between thermal triggers.
